We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (CD)
DC4C's second full length is everything you want from indie-rock: great songs, great lyrics, and ragged-but-right performances. Texturally there's nothing here you've not heard before: various combinations of guitar, drums, and bass. Cabmaster Ben Gibbard's early cassette releases reveal a slightly smug wiseass who thinks he's just okay. But for the recording of this disc, Gibbard's voice is full of confidence. His songwriting/lyrics show a new depth and grow more infectious with repeated listenings. "Company Calls Epilogue," in particular, cuts right to the heart with its winding melodic line and lyrics that are full of regret.

| This is a very good album. While I'm not that fond of DCFC's older stuff, I think that the song-writing on this record is truly top-notch. Lowell, MA, Company Calls, and Title Track particularly. stand out. This is a very mature record that reminds me of 100 other things, but maintains its own unique vision. | |

| at first listen, i was ambivalent.i was already a DCFC fan, but the new record really wasn't doing it for me. until i sat down to listen to it. the one thing that keeps this from being just another pop record, is the fact that DCFC gives the listener a certain amount of credit. it's a lot like a mark rothko painting, instantly puzzling, but nothing to illicit a response. until one day it catches you slightly off guard. and you are able to really listen to it. compared to something about airplanes, it's a far more difficult record to listen to. but there is much to be said for things that makes us learn how to listen. | |

| The first Death Cab for Cutie record is waaaay better, although something tells me that this one's a grower. The songs are slower and not as striking upon first listen. For the uninitiated, I strongly suggest checking out "Something About Airplanes" first; it's a phenomenal debut. | |

| I've never seen Death Cab For Cutie live, and just recently have discovered them, but I must say I am quite impressed. Yes, this is a "pop-rock" album, but it's crafted in a beautiful way. It's got a quiet elegance to it that lifts you up. Certain songs are better than others, like "For What Reason" standing out upon first listen. Death Cab have a great "lo-fi sound", if you want to call it that. The comparisons to Built To Spill have been made, and are somewhat understandable, but I think Death Cab have a much mellower sound. Recommended! | |

| I saw Death Cab for Cutie a couple of weeks ago at the Crystal Ballroom here in Portland, and I must say that they really have sold out. Almost all of the songs they played were off their new "pop-rock" album "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes" (with the exception of a Marigold cover...yuck!). And when I yelled out my request of "Condor Avenue" Ben (Gibbard, the lead singer/guitarist) threw me a dirty look. EXCUSE ME! I didn't realize that was against the law! I'll never go to another Death Cab show (or buy one of their albums) again. | |
