Deerhunter
Deerhunter is an experimental noise rock band from Atlanta, fronted by the compellingly odd singer Bradford Cox. Cox's vocal style blends vocal experimentation along the lines of Meredith Monk or Yoko Ono with a more direct and punky howl inspired by the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Cox is also a striking on-stage presence: the exceedingly skinny 6'4" lead singer has Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of the connective tissue that gives him abnormally long and spindly limbs. (The late Joey Ramone was another well-known frontman with Marfan syndrome.) {$...[more]

This EP arrives on the heels of a well received sophomore full-length, Cryptograms. While exploring themes not especially dissimilar, the EP functions in many ways as an epilogue to both the full-length and the accompanying well-reported anxiety surrounding it's creation. The band now has a clean slate to explore something entirely new in the future.

'Originally released as a companion disc to go with Microcastle, Weird Era Cont. is an entirely new Deerhunter album in its own right, and there's a very compelling argument to be made that this is 2008's finest full-length by the band, trumping Microcastle in its experimental intensity and all-round sonic adventurousness. This is no collection of strange B-sides either: tracks like 'Operation' and 'Dot Gain' suggest that this band have a near inexhaustible supply of avant-pop firepower under their belt, lo [ read more ]

The narcotic drones and fragmented art-punk Deerhunter explored on Cryptograms made the album a love-it-or-hate-it proposition for many indie rock fans; where some heard eclectic expansiveness, others heard incohesive experiments. Microcastle, the band's first album with guitarist Whitney Petty, brings together the disparate elements that made Cryptograms fascinating and frustrating, adding a little more pop and quite a bit more studio polish (this album was recorded in a week, as opposed to [ read more ]
