2002, Jade Tree
DENALI takes their namesake from the Athapascan word for Alaska's Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. The meaning they impart is fairly obvious: cold, remotely desolate, permanent--something that parallels the sound they forge. DENALI began in Richmond, VA in April of 2000 when Maura Davis approached her older brother (ENGINE DOWN singer/guitarist Keeley Davis) with the idea of fleshing out some songs. Followed shortly thereafter by ENGINE DOWN bandmate (and former SLEEPYTIME TRIO drummer) Jonathan Fuller and Cam DiNunzio (ex-LAZYCAIN, FOUR WALLS FALLING) DENALI began crafting beautifully dark lullabies to sear the soul. Since sharing the stage with bands such as THE FAINT, PINBACK, SPARKLEHORSE, TRISTEZA, RAINER MARIA, and THE LAPSE, the band caught the ears of SPARKLEHORSE frontman Mark Linkous who actually ended up producing a couple songs. This, the first DENALI record, clears the closet of all material to date. Alan Weatherhead, guitarist for SPARKLEHORSE, engineered the entire album.
