Denali
After witnessing the power of her brother Keeley's band, Engine Down, Maura Davis (singer/songwriter) decided she too wanted to do the rock & roll thing. Joining her for Denali in spring 2000 were Keeley Davis (synth/bass), ex-Lazycain member Cam DiNunzio (guitar), and Jonathan Fuller (drums). Within months, Denali made its stage debut in Baltimore after an illness with two of Engine Down's members forced Denali to take their place. The meaning they want to impart is fairly obvious: cold, remotely desolate, permanent -- something that parallels their sound. Denali is part trip-hop, part Fugazi, combining the sultry vocals of Maura Davis with dark electronics and the glacial guitar sound of her older brother, Keeley Davis' band Engine Down. On "Everybody Knows" Denali lays down towering spy music -- a sound that characterize [ read more ]

Richmond's Denali has seen great change of late. During preparations for the recording of "The Instinct," two members lost love, one found it anew, and another became engaged. The band also lost their long-standing rehearsal space, rescheduled studio time in the 11th hour, and cancelled a European Tour in order to focus on this album. With such emotional extremes come contrast and introspection, translating into shorter songs, quicker tempos, and seemingly new eyes on the world. Gone are the cold, reserved, [ read more ]

On The Instinct, Denali has managed to shed its heavy Portishead atmosphere for a sound that is more immediate and more unique. The classically trained Maura Davis has clearly become comfortable with rock vocals, and on "Hold Your Breath" for example, she sounds confident and empowered like she owns the song. The production is an improvement on the debut as well -- fuller and richer, yet grittier. Then there's the music, which ranges from Radiohead-worthy abstraction and experimentation [ read more ]
