2009, Smalltown Supersound
VINYL FORMAT. Limited to 500 copies! 'Meanderthals, a cult superstar collab between Norway's Rune Lindbæk (a name that looks unsuspiciously like "laid-back") and London's dubby disco ne'er do wells the Idjut Boys (Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell), embrace the island life on this instrumental debut album. It's a bit more Grace Jones than Jan & Dean, however. The theme shining through is life-affirming light - one can picture sun breaking through some window shades on "Collective Fetish," which has echoes of both Ry Cooder and Jan Hammer in its desert-dry guitar work. Krautrock synths, vibraphone and steel drums and a very subtle bass drum thump build on "Andromeda (Prelude to the Future)." There's a slightly darker feel to "Lasaron Highway" - it would work seamlessly in an upcoming John Carpenter project about a mysterious drifter. "Bugges Room" has a stronger yacht-rock element - jazzy piano-led explorations fit for Sadé's band playing a festival in St. Croix. This space-disco project might have cosmic sounds but it's grounded in comforting terrestrial reference points - maybe that's why it goes down like a bottle of Pacifico with lime on crystal clear day.' - John Dugan / Time Out Chicago Blog
