2004, Touch & Go Records
VINYL FORMAT. Pop, rock, and art songs about discordant living, misrepresentation, life, afterlife, love, and love "after hours." Scandalous. Undeniably catchy songs with incredible production, arrangements, champion crooning, and a host of extras. "They sound like Pere Ubu meets Belfegore meets The Tar Babies meets a way less chilly Notwist with a smidge of Metric thrown in"--Jane.

Peter PendergrassHow do I even begin to describe this album. It's pretty wierd, but you might like it. It's kind of southern, gospel-influenced, psychish, prog rock? I don't know. It's a pleasure to listen to though. I'm not sure why the hype died down on these guys. For a while there "Staring at the Sun" was the JAM on Subterranean. This is a totally great record though. Hard to eloquate, but great. Nick Zinner of the YYY's make a guest guitar appearance... does that help explain the greatness? At first listen these songs are not exactly poppy alt rock, and it doesn't all sound like "Staring at the Sun," which threw a lot of people off I think. There's lots of cool deep voiced men harmonizing with not so deep voiced men. There's cool drums. There's that awesome WAHWAHWAH on "Staring at the Sun"!!! (Oh! And on the vinyl version there is an awesome etching on the 4th side [the second of the second record].) Pirate some MP3's before you get this one, just to make sure you like the style.

roberthenrysmithivthis album is truly one of my all-time favorites. i can't believe how inventive it is. everytime i listen to it i'm forced into a state of pure euphoria. maybe it's only because of my inferior music knowledge, but i couldn't even begin to think of their influences. it sounds completely original to me.
