The post-millennial second-coming of singer Bettye LaVette, not to mention a renewed public interest in vintage soul in general, has inspired several labels to reissue her lost 1960s and '70s back catalog. This collection of '69 and '70 singles recorded for the Silver Fox label plays like a best-of compilation, capturing LaVette in a gritty, full-bodied mode. Her version of "Piece of My Heart" arguably bests both the Erma Franklin original and the more popular Janis Joplin cover. The title track is sass personified, and should have been a huge hit.
