With Drinking Songs, Matt Elliott confirms the move he initiated with The Mess We Made (Domino) and turns over a new leaf. Well known for his dark, organic songs as Third Eye Foundation, this experimenter also remixed Yann Tiersen’s La Dispute on the Ici d’Ailleurs sampler and is known as a historical figure in electronica, having started out with Flying Saucer Attack and AMP. Today, he gets rid of his dark and oppressive atmospheres, instead putting an emphasis on distant voices and ethereal ambience. Guitars and keyboards get softer and almost affectionate. Choirs and echoes give a mystical dimension to the album. The music floods the room and creates an insistent and hypnotic atmosphere, both lascivious and violent.
