2010, Columbia
VINYL FORMAT. Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1962. Featuring Chico Hamilton (drums), Charles Lloyd (tenor & flute), Garnett Brown (trombone), Albert Stinson (bass) and legendary Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo on guitar. "...a fascinating document... This group's sound was much harder and bluesier than Hamilton's previous quintets, and Lloyd's heated, Coltrane-inspired tenor sax was its most prominent voice. Szabo's cool, well-paced soloing is reminiscent of Jim Hall's, and Brown proves to be a far more interesting soloist that I would have ever expected. Hamilton's playing is remarkably aggressive, and his crisp, taut, nervy solo on 'Tales' reveals that he had much more going on, chops-wise, than most jazz drummers. However, the real hero of this recording is the bassist, Albert Stinson, whose supple, probing lines weave a graceful counterpoint to Hamilton's crackling drums." - Jazz Weekly
