Lounge Legends (CD)
Dusty Springfield was perhaps the greatest pop singer of the 1960s, and virtually everything she recorded was stellar; that doesn't mean that more than a handful of her biggest records still earn radio airplay, however, and even the three-disc Dusty Springfield Anthology leaves off any number of B-sides, album cuts, and unreleased performances critical to a complete overview of her career. This entry in the consistently excellent Lounge Legends series is a superb addition to the Springfield canon, focusing almost exclusively on her unjustly overlooked late-'60/early-'70s output to create a document of the singer at her most soulful, sensual and slow-burning. The classic "The Look of Love" is the only major hit among these 20 songs, and it so perfectly fits the overall ambience that even if you already own it on countless other Springfield collections, you won't regret the overlap; her brilliant rendition of Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl?" is an obvious highlight, and her reading of "Spooky" blows the Classics IV's hit recording out of the water. There's not a dull moment here, truth be told, and kudos to the Lounge Legends team for digging deep and creating an experience as consistent and engaging as Dusty Springfield herself. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
