2011, Double Phantom Records
VINYL FORMAT. Tracks: "Edita V" b/w "Cave." The Edita V single shows the Balkans breaking free of the "garage" label that surrounds Atlanta: it is by far their most polished offering to date. The clarity and production don't make for easy-listening though, as they keep their youthful edge through obtuse textures and their own sharp, unique brand of character. It is high-energy pop that references bands such as the db's or Television. "Edita V" offers angular riffs and energetic vocals, so it makes for a great place to start with the Balkans. The drums explode into a constant pulse until the chorus hits, and suddenly everything changes. Amongst all the confusion and tension appears a beautiful soaring chorus.
Balkans formed in 2008 in the suburbs of Atlanta. Members Frankie Broyles and Woodbury Shortridge had been playing together since childhood but it wasn't until Stanley Vergilis and Brett Miller joined that things started to happen. All four of the boys were still in high school when they began playing shows around town. Once word began to spread of the band's youthful and frantic live performances, audiences began to increase in size. They quickly landed gigs playing with acts such as King Khan, Jay Reatard, Times New Viking, Atlas Sound, and Black Lips in clubs that they otherwise would have been too young for.
