2000, Simple Machines
Egg Fusion finds Retsin's voice as a sort of singer/songwriter acoustic duo for experimentalists -- the album carefully avoids the most typically emotive two-girl-with-acoustic-guitars sounds in favor of an odd low-fi tone that even manages to drop into the occasional drone ("Hottie Titmouse"). This approach to sound tends to make up for the flaws in the duo's songwriting -- while their later releases have a polished loveliness that Egg Fusion doesn't really attempt, the album sports enough unusual constructions to remain interesting and worthwhile. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, AMG
