Electrelane

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Brighton, England's Electrelane formed in 1998, eventually comprising guitarist Mia Clarke, bassist Rachel Dalley, drummer Emma Gaze, and keyboardist/guitarist Verity Susman. Sharing an equal amount of fondness for Krautrock, vintage equipment like the Farfisa organ, and modern production techniques, the band made their recorded debut in January 2000 with the Film Music single on In Denial. Following another single for Fierce Panda, the group set up the Sony-supported Let's Rock! label, issuing a pair of singles (Gabriel and Blue Straggler) ...[more]

The third album from this Brighton, England band draws on elements of their previous work The Power Out, but continues to develop them further. The result is their most assured work to date with soaring melodies and irresistible grooves. Includes a version of Leonard Cohen's 'The Partisan', featured in the group's live shows.

Following Rock It To The Moon (2001), Power Out (2004), and Axes (2005), there seems to be a new kind of light shining on Electrelane that remains strong throughout this record, but the willingness to push the envelope hasn't left the band either. No Shouts No Calls is an album of enticingly irregular brilliance. The album is alive with Electrelane's signature impassioned organ melodies, primal drum beats, rhythmic bass and weaving guitar riffs, but there's an underlying softness   [ read more ]

The first single from the upcoming Electrelane album is a doozy. "On Parade" is from their debut LP, "The Power Out," and the two b-sides, "I'm On Fire" (Yes, it is a Bruce Springsteen cover) and "Teach The Sailor To Pray" are only available here. Trust me, you're gonna hear a lot about Electrelane very very soon, for good reason.

Never ones to beat around the bush Electrelane check in with a nice between album comp of stray stuff that has been floating around here and there. Most bands would kill to have albums this good, let alone their b-sides.

This reissue of Electrelane's out of print debut album comes at the perfect time. After two hot records and lots of US touring Electrelane have gone from barely known to a band that makes folk sit up and take notice. "Just the way a debut album should be" 8/10 - NME.

Electrelane's second album, The Power Out, is also their debut for the esteemed, arty British label Too Pure, the perfect home for a band that resembles so many of the imprint's other acts. The similarities appear early on, with the Stereolab-eqsue motorik and French vocals that drive "Gone Under Sea," the wobbly-yet-charming singing on "Birds" that recalls Pram's Rosie Cuckston, and the intricate interplay of guitars and keyboards on every track that bring to mind {$th' Faith Healer   [ read more ]

Beginning with their breakthrough second effort, The Power Out, it feels like Electrelane has had a specific focus for each album. The Power Out itself added vocals to their sound, Axes concentrated on experiments in tension and release, and No Shouts No Calls delivers a set of urgent, romantic epics. This may not be their most dramatic album -- the women of Electrelane don't get around to their lock-groove rock until the seventh track, "Between the Wolf and the Dog" -- but its best    [ read more ]
