Ellen Allien
Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin's Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien's immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the '90s, she hosted programs on Berlin's Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called ...[more]

Bpitch's ever-respected ringleader follows up 2001's fabulous "Stadtkind" album and the recent Weiss mix with a fresh new nine-tracker, "Berlinette." Building on the ace "Erdbeermund" 12", the album is a much more focused effort than we've witnessed from her before. Dense structures, chunky glitchtronix, heavy beats (some of which are courtesy of beat-twister extraordinaire, Apparat), and devastating basslines and melodies all combine to form a unique collection of 21st century technopop. Recommended!

VINYL FORMAT. Sool is the fourth full-length solo release (following Stadtkind, Berlinette and Thrills) by the inimitable queen, Ellen Allien. Welcome once again to the Allien world: this one is subtle, mysterious, and minimal. Created in the deepest and darkest of Berlin's winters, 2007-2008, Sool is intended to be a valve, a loophole, a respite from the crazy summers into the introspection and hibernation of winter. This could easily be Allien's most intimate album yet: the sounds of everyday life [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. After Ellen Allien's long-expected fourth solo album Sool, here is the first 12'', which presents two tracks off of the album in extended vinyl versions. "Sprung" is characterized best by a permanent moving back and forth. Smooth, precise loops and subliminal bass lines accent the mysterious effects. "Its" is driving and direct -- a rough and straight piece of music that evolves, goes forward, and absorbs the listener completely.

This is a selective and very nice collection Ellen Allien has offered us. Here we have all of her small, vinyl, remix releases from 1995-2003 served to you in one tasty dish. There's even a bonus: you also get Ellen Allien's Gold Chains Remix. What you notice on this album is Ellen Allien's relentless appetite for new sounds and genres. This is the eagerly-awaited fourth installment in BPitch Control's Boogy Bytes series, mixed by the label queen herself, Ellen Allien. Allien describes this mix as "emotional, noisy, trippy, weird and sexual," an apt characterization of her typology of sound that is perhaps more crooked, more abstract or technoid than others, but with a seamless queue of artists that you can't help but be excited about. As a DJ, she maintains that emotional and direct contact to the audience always comes first -- lik [ read more ]

Techno-goddess Ellen Allien returns with her third studio album. Teaming up with Holger Zielske with whom she also produced Stadtkind and Berlinette, Thrills harkens back to the dark, dense warehouses of German clubs like Tresor and Detroit basement acid house blowouts. Allien also conducts experiments with new-old units such as the Roland 808 and an ARP 2600 to produce warmer, more relaxed digital sounds. Thrills connects the dots of 808 State, Gina X and Kompakt. "I wanted to do an analogue mix, by hand. I used my favourite records of last year and the newest ones. I like analogue! And I like to hear how one has to manipulate the mix until it's tight. I like the mix because to me it's the ideal club mix that I personally would like to hear in a club. It's also a nice memory for me - I can remember every record being played by myself in a club. And when I now listen to the mix I can recall all the great moments." - Ellen Allien[ read more ]
