From a Basement on the Hill (CD)
Elliott Smith has been a patron saint of the indie scene since his days helming Portland heroes Heatmiser. As a solo artist, Smith led a revolution of home four-trackers, from Beck to Cat Power, out of the bedroom and into the studio, where Smith's fondness for Beatlesque melody led to some of the most beautifully orchestrated pop of the last decade. "From a Basement on the Hill" is Smith's final recording and finds Smith returning to an edgier, guitar-driven sound,
alongside his trademark heart-rending balladry. Richard Cromelin of the LA Times said, "This is prime Smith, with the kind of meticulous, evocative lyric, bittersweet melody and intimate delivery that made him one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation."![]()

| Oh man, my girlfriend got this album for me pre-released ... and I'm damn glad she did. It's definitely an ode to the late Elliot Smith. The mix is perfect, and the songs are just damn hypnotic. Definitely a must by for fans and new listeners alike. | |

| To understand pain everyone should hear this release by Mr. Smith. This was the most honest songwriting about living as a drug addict and the problems and struggles trying to stay clean. Great haunting melodies like ''Twilight'' really tug at your heart while ''Coast to Coast'' just has a full-on rock assault with two drummers. The album is paced brilliantly and ends with a song declaring the state of the present America. Please pick this up and do not be dissapointed. Elliott had a quiet legacy in rock where he accomplished a lot. | |

| i wonder if he was present for the production of his last CD considering he was already dead in its mastering stages, even though i personally believe it was foul play. anyhow the melodies produced on this CD sound less like his earlier work and more like the beatles. is it a mere a coincidence? i think not. i do however like the arrangement of the songs and the music but it still needs to grow on me in its entirety. sad to see another brilliant, talented musician of my generation gone while the masses of unskilled, superficial younger pseudo-artist gen x-ers raking in millions and thriving. it's a shame.... | |
