2009, ROIR
VINYL FORMAT. Arguably, no other genre has facilitated as much unique musical hybridization as dub. The visionary production innovations of originators like King Tubby and Lee Perry have touched nearly every modern musical movement from punk to hip-hop to electronica. Essential Dub collects 14 of the genre's boldest, most outre experiments. From the "dubetry" (dub poetry) of Oku Onuora to the Nyabinghi drumming of Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus, the traditional elements of Jamaican music are well represented. But it's the more radical departures from the music's typical sound palette that leave the most lasting impressions - especially milestone tracks by hardcore innovators Bad Brains and the Middle Eastern/Jamaican fusion of Badawi.
