2004, Instinct
A 16-track collection of infectious and inventive synth-pop driven by the innovative arrangements of Christopher Ewen (ex-Figures On a Beach) and songwriting talent of Stephin Merritt. Merritt's classic songwriting style can be seen here (sample lyric from Future Bible Heroes' "Losing Your Affection": "I would rather rub the hair of a bear in her lair in the opposite direction than be losing your affection"). The album is the band's second full-length CD, and marks the first time Magnetic Fields member/manager Claudia Gonson steps out as main vocalist. Her voice exudes a mature innocence that is at once playful and provocative. When armed with Merritt's timeless lyrics, the results are stunning.
