2001, Bacchus Archives
Digging deep into the regional punk scene as it spread throughout the USA at the end of the '70s, Bacchus Archives has picked up a disc released locally last year in Tucson, containing music recorded almost 22 years prior. Why would you care about THE PEDESTRIANS? For starters, THE PEDESTRIANS keyboardist Chris Cacavas became known in the early '80s along with his band GREEN ON RED in the LA 'paisley underground' circuit, later to become world travelers with Chris graduating to a solo career. THE PEDESTRIANS bassist Dave Seger became a founding member of GIANT SANDWORMS, later to be GIANT SAND, leaving that behind to join desert faves NAKED PREY. THE PEDESTRIANS started in a bedroom during 1976 playing NEIL YOUNG covers and by the summer of '79, started, along with THE SUSPECTS and Z9, Tucson's early punk scene. This historical and enjoyable document was recorded at a local Tucson boozer dump called Pearl's Hurricane, one of the first places in the desert town to host 'punk' bands. Strutting rhythms and melodies played with both innocent whimsy and coarse command enabled THE PEDESTRIANS music to be instantly infectious no matter if they were playing their vast repertoire of cover tunes or their precious few originals. Cut from a two-track cassette, this disc is a testament to the band's musical fertility and really captures the frenzied lunacy from band and audience at Pearl's, inspired by punk rock's newly spreading spirit.
