2008, 54 40 Or Fight!
The New Yorker said of her full-length debut, Placelessness, that it "evokes but does not mimic many of the pop milestones of the past decade, including the fractured beats of Radiohead and the exuberance of Bjork," and Pitchfork critic Brian Howe praised Simone for how she wraps "her smoldering voice around dark, fractured arrangements that tremble on the verge of vanishing entirely." Simone's newest album marks a dramatic divergence from her prior work. It is a cover album featuring the music of Russian cult icon, Yanka Dyagileva, a Siberian punk-folk singer who drowned under mysterious circumstances in 1991. Sung entirely in Russian, Everyone is Crying Out to Me, Beware both echoes the lo-fi samizdat quality of Yanka's recordings and subverts it with lush arrangements and intricately textured layers of trumpet, cello and guitars.
