2006, Sub Pop Records
VINYL FORMAT. Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and bassist Mat Brooke formed Band Of Horses in 2004 after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band Of Horses rises from those ashes. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which channel a strange brew of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, and Doug Martsch), the group's woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing, and hope. Both raggedly epic and delicately pensive, this is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

Customer Reviews

janu sirsasanahorses came through the D in attempts to open for iron & wine earlier last year. iron&wine couldn't make it, and naturally, me an the boys were quite bummed. but we received quite a treat instead...band of horses played for free, were loud and crisp, made me laugh, bob my head like a straight scenester, and it was PEACE. they were nice dudes, too, so i bought dude w/ the strong beard a budweiser. the tour EP was a must-have, and i played it over and over. my favorite music snob buddy and i finally found the release date: 3.21.06...we were thrilled, and now that it's here (and really f**kin GOOD), dust has settled and my breath is a little less tense. my heart is at ease. don't even think ONCE, just buy it already. and go see them play.
