2010, Polyvinyl Record Company
Fred Thomas is best known for his work as a prolific songwriter and performer in Saturday Looks Good To Me, Flashpapr, Lovesick and seemingly countless other Michigan bands. One would think working with multiple bands would keep a person's hands full, but no. There is just too much to say, and sometimes the only way to say it is standing alone in a room. This 12 song album collects sad scraps and gritty memories of love and hope, sung in a wavering voice that always remembers sadness is just around the corner. Guests show up on some tracks to add vibraphone, banjo, what-have-you, but no matter how many instruments are going on, it always seems to sound like just a guitar and a voice. The late night remembrances and blurry-eyed gestures towards new dreams of a boy stretched out on his bed playing guitar and singing songs to himself. There's a big pile of Bob Dylan records next to the bed, but whatever... This record is great. It will make you happy to hear it.
