2006, Faux Pas
After a long period in preliminary hibernation, 24-year-old Tim Shiel emerges from his makeshift home studio in outer suburban Melbourne as Faux Pas, armed with a 5-track CD that showcases his playful, gently psychedelic 'beatronica'.
Inspired by international sound mavericks such as Caribou, Minotaur Shock and Cornelius, and local sample-meisters from the Avalanches to Mountains in the Sky and Gotye, Tim assembles tracks via cut-and-paste, supplementing his arrangements with buzzing electronica sounds and DIY home recording. The tracks are dense with samples but light in feeling, littered with generous doses of harps and harpsichords, Afro beat rhythms, sampled ethnic instruments and home-recorded guitar and Casio tones. The end result is music that finely balanced between the past and the future, translating the sounds of old genres into music that is insistently contemporary.
