Feist
She was born Leslie Feist in Calgary in the mid-'70s but goes by her surname when it comes to making music for a living. The Jhay-inspired songstress got her start playing in a high school punk band called Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle of the bands contest, Placebo played their first gig opening for the Ramones, and for the next five years, Feist perfected her rock ways. Touring cross-Canada in the end took its toll on Feist. She had strained her voice so much, she was told she'd never sing...[more]

It's hard not to be floored by the staggering breadth and depth of the material on The Reminder. You can hear the sound of every facet of Feist - the punk kid from Calgary, the T.O. indie rock poster girl, the Parisian ex-pat who taps the cobblestone. The lost and the found - without the slightest bit of compromise. It's Feist simply answering her own questions with questions, and giving in - as she sings so sweetly at the end of The Reminder - to "how her heart behaves."

The beautiful songstress Feist -- who roomed with Peaches, worked with the Kings of Convenience, and supplied vocals for Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It in People" -- steps out for her debut album, "Let It Die." Carefully pieced around Feist's seductive voice, the album forms the missing link between ye olde folk (storytelling), the Brill building era (the quest for the hook), doo-wop (melody and mood), and minimal modern pop arrangements. Francoise Hardy-style orchestral pop, hipster neuvo-disco, and [ read more ]

'My Moon My Man' is the lead single from the new Feist album, The Reminder. Stereogum said, 'it's restrained, sexy, and has us expecting good things from the record.' The EP also includes the dance-floor ready Boys Noize Classic Remix as well as the shimmering, plaintive, 'The Water,' which immerses Feistβ??s stunning vocals in layers of vibraphone and piano, letting haunted allegorical lyrics about stoic mountains, a clumsy and dangerous sea and little bone piles slowly emerge from the depths.
