He's vulnerable, even though he's known for writing songs called "Why I Write Such Good Songs" and "Graham Smith Is The Strongest Man Alive". So why isn't Graham the next big thing? Is he too smart? Is it that he seems to have gone to the Daniel Johnston school of singing? Anyone who expects him to be a better singer than he was before his voice broke is sorely missing the point. Final Battle is bristling with soul and for the first time Graham isn't being facetious just to get attention. Sure, he's still cocksure, but humbled a bit by the way that fame is fleeting, relationships are volatile, and life isn't always so perfect. Lessons older and wiser people have learned, sure, but wonderfully and forever captured as a diary or snapshot.
Whether Final Battle is as In The Aeroplane Over The Sea-esque as it appears is up for debate. What is not is that Graham Smith is a fascinating and brilliant young man swimming through a sea of conflict. Graham is growing up quickly, but he might be finally finding his voice.
