2003, Mud Memory
Premiere recording from DC's only avant-garde drum/bass duo with a post-Warhol, celebrity-centered ideology. Paeans to media archetypes like "Winona Ryder" and "Sean Connery" provide the ground upon which this duo's Minutemen-minded punk rave-ups find room to sprout with the help of some structured improvisation. Justin Moyer's bass work, which borrows equally from low-end hero Mike Watt and orchestral jazz composer Charles Mingus, finds perfect complement in Ryan Hicks' fusion of Elvin Jones polyrhythm, Susie Ibarra texture, and John Bonham attack. Short songs, big ideas: Edie Sedgwick calls a meeting between the Ruins and Ornette Coleman in an agit-pop/minimalist setting. The duo tours the Midwest and South this winter to bolster a resume which already includes shows with NYC-favorite The Rapture and Indiana's own Panoply Academy Legionnaires.
