Five Deez
Just one of the acts making Cincinnati one of the seminal cities for underground rap, Five Deez formed around area producer/MC extraordinaire Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician and MC/producer Pase Rock. The pair debuted with EPs in 1999 and 2000, then released their first full-length, Koolmotor, in 2001. Both are also heavily involved in the Cincinnati-based Wanna Battle crew, also including DJ Hi-Tek, Talib Kweli, Lone Catalysts, and Rubix. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide[more]

The second single from the Koolmotor album from Cincinnati's innovative hip hop gurus FIVE DEEZ. The title track-featuring the Deez chanting over a polyrhythmic drum pattern until they're joined by Japanese emcee sensation SHING02, who busts a beautifully poetic verse in Japanese over a soulful and seductive FAT JON composition-backed by a remix by Chicago fusemen TORTOISE, who mix their post-rock gurgle to the Deez's crafty hip hop. Includes instrumental versions of each, plus bonus tracks.

He's only one-fourth of the Five Deez crew, but his frenetic production on Kinkynasti can't help but overshadow the serviceable rapping. Recalling De La Soul, Kool Keith, and Prince Paul without sounding like any of them, Kinkynasti has too much going on for anyone but the most skilled rappers to overcome. T [ read more ]
