Flash it to the Beat

VINYL FORMAT. Easily one of the most mysterious labels of a then-primitive Hip Hop record business, Bozo Meko's now legendary releases first began popping up in the early 80s. Each and every release from the label was limited, and thus, highly sought after. "Flash It to the Beat" is no exception and like many of the greatest records of the era, it has an interesting story behind it. According to Hip Hop journalist David Toop (author of the "Rap Attack" series), "Flash It To The Beat" was recorded live at the Bronx River Community Center by Afrika Bambaataa. Taken off a tape circulating NYC, Bozo Meko released the recording, capitalizing off the success of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Sugar Hill Records, the group's label, then rushed the group into the studio to record an official version which became the "Flash To The Beat" single that was released in February 1982. While the Sugar Hill version was superior in recording quality and critically acclaimed as one of the groups greatest releases, the Bozo Meko release is clearly the offering that has endured with Hip Hop fans over the years. Elements of the record have been sampled countless times from DJ Premier sampling the drums on Gang Starr's "You Know My Steez," to the classic "Zulu!
