Fleetwood Mac
While most bands undergo a number of changes over the course of their careers, few groups experienced such radical stylistic changes as Fleetwood Mac. Initially conceived as a hard-edged British blues combo in the late '60s, the band gradually evolved into a polished pop/rock act over the course of a decade. Throughout all of their incarnations, the only consistent members of Fleetwood Mac were drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie -- the rhythm section that provided the band with its name. Ironically, they had the least influence over the musical direct...[more]

Rumours is the kind of album that transcends its origins and reputation, entering the realm of legend -- it's an album that simply exists outside of criticism and outside of its time, even if it thoroughly captures its era. Prior to this LP, Fleetwood Mac were moderately successful, but here they turned into a full-fledged phenomenon, with Rumours becoming the biggest-selling pop album to date. While its chart success was historic, much of the legend surrounding the record is born from the group [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. By 1970 Fleetwood Mac were immensely popular, touring constantly both at home and abroad. In February 1970 the band rocked Boston's legendary "Boston Tea Party" playing three amazing concerts there for three consecutive nights in a row. The performances were recorded in hopes of releasing a live album, but frontman Peter Green soon announced his decision to quit the band and the masters were promptly shelved. Some of the material eventually trickled out onto a few albums during the 1980s (Jump [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. "Sisters of the Moon" taken from the album Tusk; "Gold Dust Woman" and "The Chain" taken from the album Rumours. "Before Fleetwood Mac inadvertently admitted Ms. Stevie Nicks into their band as a required adjunct to her then partner Lindsey Buckingham joining, the already multi-platinum rock powerhouse had achieved nothing close to the inquisitive substance and analytical content that they would eventually typify in the subsequent years. Of course, Nicks turned out to be the unde [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Many people felt disappointed by Mr. Wonderful after the sublime first album. But in interviews Peter Green has stated the purpose of the album was to recreate the sound of a south side Chicago blues club. Raw and rough, the album does just that. Some fantastic guitar (surprised?), and some great off-color lyrics too. The horns are sloppy and perfect for the songs done on this album. What would 'Love That Burns' be without the subtle horns riffing away in the background? The same can be [ read more ]

This Peter Green-led edition of the Mac isn't just an important transition between their initial blues-based incarnation and the mega-pop band they became, it's also their most vital, exciting version. The addition of Danny Kirwan as second guitarist and songwriter foreshadows not only the soft-rock terrain of "Bare Trees" and "Kiln House" with Christine Perfect-McVie, but also predicts Rumours. That only pertains to roughly half of the also excellent material here, though; the rest is [ read more ]

In some ways the four "bonus tracks" which augment the Snapper's Original Fleetwood Mac (1971) are actually as interesting as the Blue Horizon label material the compilation is centered on. Die-hard enthusiasts wishing to explore this seminal incarnation are advised to direct their attention to the six-disc Complete Blue Horizon Sessions: 1967-1969 (1999). The casual listener, however, should find this collection provides an apt representation of those sides. Prior to the addition of {$Danny Kir [ read more ]

Fleetwood Mac's February 5-7, 1970, appearance at the Tea Party club in Boston was recorded for a live album that did not appear at the time, but the tapes have served as the source for several albums, including Live in Boston, Boston Live, and the three-volume Live at the Boston Tea Party. This is another collection drawn from the same material. The Fleetwood Mac of early 1970 was a quintet in which the rhythm section of bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood was fronted not [ read more ]

A live concert from January 25, 1969, recorded in Los Angeles by soundman Dinky Dawson. The fidelity is very good (excellent, in fact, by late-1960s standards), and the band are good form on a nine-song set (a tenth track is just a "Tune Up") that sticks mostly to lesser-known originals and covers. That means you don't get classics on the order of "Black Magic Woman" or "Oh Well," but on the other hand it's nice to hear different versions of some of the lesser-known early Mac originals, like {$P [ read more ]

For reasons that no one seems to recall in detail -- but for which we can be grateful -- when it was time to release a second Fleetwood Mac LP in America, producer Mike Vernon and the band didn't just send the existing Mr. Wonderful album across the Atlantic -- a little fine-tuning and retooling was in order. The band had just expanded by one member, to a quintet -- with the addition of guitarist Danny Kirwan -- by the end of 1968, whereas Mr. Wonderful represented them as a four-piece outfit [ read more ]

Fleetwood Mac's only full-length album with a lineup of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Billy Burnette, and Rick Vito proved an artistic and commercial disappointment not so much because Lindsey Buckingham was missing as songwriter/guitarist/singer/ producer as because the group's other writers, Nicks and Christine McVie, didn't pick up the slack, relying on Burnette and Vito to come up with material. They tried: Burnette's {&"Hard Feelings," [ read more ]
