Formed in Oxford, England, by longtime friends Yannis Philippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevan (drums), along with Andrew Mears on vocals, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers, Foals -- whose name is a play on the etymology of Philippakis' name -- began as a way to protest against the proggier sounds that were both popular in Oxford and in Philippakis and Bevan's former band, the Edmund Fitzgerald. After releasing the single "Try This on Your Piano" in 2006, Mears left Foals in order to more fully concentrate on his other group, {$Yo...[more]

This is the debut from Oxford, England's five-piece dance-rock band. Completing the circuit between the minimalism of American composer Steve Reich, guitars that sound like insects, and tennis player Andy Roddick, theirs is a uniquely winning formula. Driving percussion high in the mix, guitars played above the 12th fret, no chords, and splashes of synth color all come together like the schematics for a piece of precision engineering.

VINYL FORMAT. Kompakt introduces a strange pairing; the UK band Foals versus Ewan Pearson and Supermayer (aka Superpitcher and Michael Mayer) with versions of Foals' "Olympic Airways," a tune that walks the line between dance music and organic art rock. Supermayer toy with the original melodies and chorus, building it all into an elative crescendo. Ewan Pearson's remix is a Balearic-y blissful gem that sets a new standard. This will be an exclusive limited edition run of 1000 copies, so take note!

Although Oxford, England's Foals didn't release their debut full-length, Antidotes, until the spring of 2008, they had already begun to make quite a name for themselves, thanks to the British singles "Hummer" and "Mathletics" and successful dates in the U.S. the preceding fall; meaning, of course, that the anticipation for the record had plenty of time to grow. Fortunately, Antidotes is able to live up to the hype. Frontman Yannis Philippakis uses his limited vocal range to his greatest ad   [ read more ]
