Four Tet
Spawned from the urge to do something apart from his post-rock band Fridge, Kieran Hebden's Four Tet project balances organic and programmed sounds. Hebden formed Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Adam Ilhan while still in high school. When Fridge went on temporary hiatus for Jeffers and Ilhan to attend college, Hebden spent time playing with ideas gained from hip-hop and electronica that he hadn't had time for while concentrating on the band. Eager to experiment, Hebden bought a computer and began collecting drum and sound samples. Though h...[more]

For his solo projects, Fridge's Kieran Hebden is a lo-fi experimentalist who, had he been recording 15 years ago, would've been cranking out songs on a four-track recorder instead of a laptop. As demonstrated on his third record, Rounds, he's one of the few musicians capturing all the promise inherent in computer science -- being able to summon, manipulate, and mix any sound imaginable. The record offers something to nearly every audience that could approach it, with a bit of a groove for electroni [ read more ]

Inspired by the energy and ideas of old school techno and the freedom and edge of more recent hip-hop from the likes of Madlib and MF DOOM, Kieran Hebden set out to make a record really fast that would retain all the energy and enthusiasm he was feeling, and that wouldn't sound like anyone else; wouldn't even sound like himself. Everything Ecstatic, the fourth album from Kieran Hebden in his Four Tet guise is hugely anticipated - and rightly so - Everything Ecstatic is as demented, clever and [ read more ]

Domestic US pressing. As one-third of the unique, genre-bending Fridge, Kieran Hebden has already established himself as a vital creative force blurring the lines between rock, jazz, electronic, and ambient. Two years since the release of "Dialogue," the debut by his solo project Fourtet, he has solidified this standing with "Pause" -- a dramatic shift in style, sound, and feel from its predecessor. "Pause" shows maturity in its employment of a more distinctive range of sonics, from incidental rustlings and [ read more ]

Kieran Hebden is one of those artists whose receptive audience is without classification. And that extends into the world of musical colleagues. Four Tet has commandeered fans and collaborators as wide reaching as experimental rock bands (Radiohead), massive pop acts (Coldplay), underground hip-hop producers (the late J Dilla), post-punk influenced upstarts (Bloc Party), electronic mavericks (Aphex Twin), folk chanteuses (Beth Orton and Juana Molina), and jazz legends (with Kieran's ongoing collaboration wi [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. The second single to be taken from Four Tet's hugely acclaimed and latest album Everything Ecstatic, is "A Joy". A churning bass-heavy tune, like a washing machine set to "queasy," "A Joy" is, in its own right, and in the context of the album, a striking opener. Impossible drums skitter across an alien jazz terrain and disappear behind rocks, only to come back bigger and more terrifying. For this vinyl single release however, the bar has been significantly raised. Hebden h [ read more ]
