Franz Ferdinand's relatively quick rise is no hype job. They have arrived fully-formed, that rare combination of great hooks, smart looks, live prowess and swagger -- without all that messy pretension. Their songs are a delectable mix of rock, pop, disco and postpunk, a band not afraid to combine the nervy guitar funk of The Talking Heads and Orange Juice, the off-beat hi-hat accents of Moroder-era Blondie and the glam stomp of The Fall. HUGE hooks, I tell you. I mean, huge. Already a massive European hit with over 200K sold, and spreading fast.

User Reviews

Neil Dez - Louisville, , USA
There could be no better way to expect the transition from garage rock revival to new wave glam than this debut LP from Glasgow's finest. After only a mere two years since the Strokes debut, the ball is now in the UK's court. Even with the extremely popularized brit-sound of Interpol being flapped in the face of every indie rocker for the last two years, it only makes this band look better. Combining the dynamic, singular guitar hooks of Television and Gang of Four, along with the vocal eccentricities of an operatic Mark E. Smith (or Julian Cope), Franz Ferdinand is the center point. Such that, for all those who weren't emotional enough to like Interpol, and all those who were too cool to like the Strokes, Franz Ferdinand presents the dividing line. Pretentious? yes. Effective? Absolutely, and the songs prove it!
