VINYL FORMAT. By the time Fried, Cope's second solo effort, was released in 1984 (the Teardrop Explodes had disbanded the previous year), Cope had a considerable reputation as being a drug fiend and borderline lunatic; however, the album's title as well as its cover art (picturing Cope wearing nothing but a turtle shell) suggest that Cope was well aware of this, and may have even tried to promote this image. The music is by no means muddled or uncontrolled and Cope knowingly launches himself into an ethereal world -- at times wistful, at times angst-ridden -- of inspired psych-influenced space pop.
