2001, Up Records
Tiffany Anders' debut album Funny Cry Happy Gift has been 26 years in the
making. The confidence, depth, range and
talent that Tiffany possesses has translated into a complex musical
expression that is ripe with brooding, lost love, anguish and romance.
Her voice embodies an uncanny effect that is uniquely lush and sparse. It was this voice that caught the ear of PJ Harvey. The two had already
met several times when they ran into each other one day on the NYC
streets. Anders handed her a tape and soon Harvey was regularly attending
her local gigs. When Anders was finally ready to record her debut album,
she came up with the idea to ask Harvey to produce it. Although offered
many projects over the years, Harvey had never produced before. This
time, fortunately, she agreed and the two (along with some help from J
Mascis) holed themselves up for 13 days in Brooklyn's FireProof Studios. The results that you hear on Funny Cry Happy Gift are very much what
Anders heard in her head when she decided to make this record, and Harvey
adhered to that vision throughout the recording process.
The songs on the album are the natural observations of a girl whose
perceptions on life are filled with warmth and hope as well as stark
bewilderment. They are an extremely mature collection from a very young
writer.
