2009, Darla
Singer/songwriter Dameon Waggoner and band Lowlights create haunting Western soundscapes; songs of windswept, lyrical aloneness with sweet melancholic melodies. There's even a couple murder ballads here; one new, one traditional. A backline of guitar, bass, drums, fiddle, banjo and pedal steel keep it real behind the maestro's gravely voice, harmonica, guitar & keys. Further/Free is Lowlights third record and picks up right where the last album, critic's favorite Dark End Road, left off. This time, however, Lowlights is a bit more like The Band than The Church and much more like Graham Parsons than Spiritualized. Lowlights are more stone cold, rock solid and earthy than ever. Their musical roots are definitely Country. With the addition of trumpet on the album's key track 'Under the Sun' Lowlights feel like Ennio Morricone backing The Pogues. A nice touch. Dameon Lee Wagoner is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico who spent his formative years behind the Redwood Curtain in the northern California college town of Arcata up in Humbolt County. He now resides in Los Angeles where he works with his Country/Rock band Lowlights and Bluegrass band Big Eagle. Both bands play out live often and pick up and once a year do a week or two of live dates throughout the west and beyond.
