Gastr del Sol was the most prominent vehicle of indie-rock stalwart David Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait, Slint, and Bastro. With Gastr del Sol, the Louisville, KY-born vocalist/guitarist/pianist's evolution from conventional rock music into more intricate and sophisticated tone patterns became complete; debuting with the 1993 EP The Serpentine Similar, the group -- a shifting aggregate of talents which initially inclued bassist Bundy K. Brown and drummer John McEntire -- began exploring their new approach, taking off from often improvisationa...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. Eight songs from the two men who were, essentially, Gastr del Sol: Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs. Heavy on the acoustic guitars, Crookt, Crackt, or Fly presents an intriguing and mysterious glimpse into the musical nether-worlds of two creative geniuses.

VINYL FORMAT. "Jim O'Rourke's last album with Gastr del Sol is a subdued, meditative affair, bringing together elements of folk, jazz, film music, and the avant-garde. 'The Seasons Reverse' opens the album with a deceptive, gentle melody and strummed, hushed guitars. Its sound and leisurely pace set the tone, but not the style, for the rest of the album. Is 90s nostalgia underway yet? If not, this reissue may be just the thing to get it started. To the chagrin of many, the press will label it all "post-rock." It's the definitive movement of the decade, and front and center are Gastr Del Sol, comprised of David Grubbs (previously: Squirrel Bait, Bastro) and Jim O'Rourke (subsequently: Wilco, Sonic Youth). At this point, Gastr del Sol was pretty much just David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, though John McEntire was still around here and there on a couple of songs. There are a few other guests at points -- percussion from Steve Butters and clarinet from Gene Coleman, both on the lengthy, mysterious "Work From Smoke" -- but otherwise this was just the partnership going at it. Acoustic guitars were all the rage for the duo and that's what a listener will hear a lot of over Crookt's eight-song    [ read more ]
