Ghost
A collective of psychedelic-minded Japanese musicians headed by guitarist Masaki Batoh, Ghost records commune-minded free-range psychedelia with equal debts to the Can/Amon Dnnl axis of Krautrock, as well as West Coast psych units like Blue Cheer and Jefferson Airplane. Batoh grew up in Kyoto, where he attended a private school well-geared to spark his interest in rock music, from Dylan and Pink Floyd to the Velvet Underground. Later, he formed Ghost with a large and varying lineup, centered around contributors such as Michio Kurihara, {$Kazuo ...[more]

For the first time in many moons, the people of Earth have a real call to celebrate -- the return of Ghost. Their new offering, Hypnotic Underworld, is their best album ever -- more colorful than "Ghost," heavier than "Temple Stone," deeper and wider than "Lama Rabi Rabi," more psyched and folked than "Snuffbox Immanence" and "Second Time Around," and with a more mountainous jam than "Tune In, Turn On, Free Tibet." Believe it. Yes, "Hypnotic Underworld" is heavy with highlights, adding 70 minutes of [ read more ]

With a slightly reshuffled lineup -- Ogino now clearly became Batoh's chief collaborator, while new percussionist Setsuko Furuya accompanied the returning Kurihara, cellist Hiromichi Sakamoto and two brass players -- Ghost on Snuffbox created another striking, beautiful album. With its senses of fusions now firmly grasped, able to slide from trumpet and flute-accompanied folk on the opening "Regenesis" to the initially acoustic then ragingly electric "Sad Shakers," Ghost achiev [ read more ]

At sunset on the night of October 9th, '06, a crowd gathered at Nippon Yusen Soko, a converted warehouse space located on Yokahama Bay. The performance space was chosen for its sonic qualities such as natural reverb as well as its resemblance to Potala Palace in Lhasa. Band members were spaced apart to prevent eye contact & allow distance for the reverberations to unfold between them. The CD performance is an edited version of the evening's events/the DVD is a completely live, 4 camera view into the collecti [ read more ]

Combining pan-Asian traditional music with British hard rock and American psychedelia is just one of the many tricks up Ghost's sleeve - but all gestures are equally heart-felt and wouldn't be played if they didn't represent something true and real to the group. Likewise, Ghost leader and lead singer Masaki Batoh combines his native tongue with English in an eccentric manner that is in fact the only way that the lyrics could be expressed. The result, played by a sextet of Ghosts led by firebrand guitarist M [ read more ]

The incipient fascination with and appreciation of Tibetan culture by Batoh started to fully emerge with this album, in both title, design (the title is shown on the cover art in the style of the Tibetan alphabet, while art from that culture appears on the back) and similar other signifiers. Not that Lama Rabi Rabi is strictly about that country or its situation - Ghost would wait some years more for its specific effort on that front - but it does showcase the sense of depth Batoh brings to his [ read more ]

Give points to Ghost for defying expectations right from the start of its first album, at least if one is coming in merely expecting a drifty, new age type of experience. "Sun Is Tangging" may start off fairly quietly, but then it explodes in a noise fest and then returns to a calmer acoustic serenity throughout. With that as a fine surprise starting point, Batoh and company enter fully into their fascinating acid-folk-jam world with a strong number of songs. The group and its many guests - no less [ read more ]
