2011, Bar None
It took two disparate seasons – late summer and deep winter – for Darren Jessee (Ben Folds Five) and his band the Hotel Lights to finish their third full-length, Girl Graffiti. The result is an album that's decidedly relaxed and exquisitely shimmering – all at once. Recorded in Richmond, VA at the Sound of Music with frequent collaborator and engineer Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Cracker), Girl Graffiti has the spirit of a live recording, but with a graceful, polished delivery – a testament to the musicianship and sound these four seasoned players have created together over the years. At heart, Girl Graffiti is a "kinda Stones-y" rock record, a record with majestic soundscapes, melodic ease and sigh-inducing lyrics.
