2000, Jetset
In 1998 The Gunga Din first appeared on stage in New York and theywere exceptional. Word got around fast; they were the group that other bands wanted to play with. Touring bands coming to the city had to have them as an opening act . Nick Cave, Jonathan Fire Eater and Helium were among the first.
So what is so exceptional about The Gunga Din? Smoky, narcotic vocals that couldn't care less; brittle guitar lines that appear from nowhere; lyrics which only hint at dark misdeeds; soulful basslines and psych-damaged drumming. And as if that wasn't enough; The Secret Weapon, a slinky Farfisa organ that ties it all together effortlessly. Imagine PJ Harvey, Jacque Brel, and The Velvet Underground broadcast live from The Wiemar Republic. In 1999 their debut , "Introducing The Gunga Din" seduced the New York underground. In 2000 "Glitterati" is ready to take on the Outer Boroughs.
