2003, Mud
Jacob Fleischli returns with his sophomore effort, Gone To Heaven. Recorded at Matt (Centaur/Hum) Talbott's Great Western Record Recorders in Tolono, Illinois - the same town that the Fleishli forefathers settled in upon immigrating to the US. This record is a fitting homecoming pairing Jake's obsession with death and the ghosts of his past, merging his Bob Dylan fixation with Talbott's sonic expertise. This is indeed a special album. In addition to Dylan's pervasive influence listeners will hear echoes of the darker side of Uncle Tupelo, a rootsy-psychedelia akin to Green On Red meets Beachwood Sparks meets Jesus And Mary Chain's "Psychocandy," and the catharsis/psychosis of The Gun Club's "Fire Of Love" if it were diffused through a prism formed by Mercury Rev's "Deserters Songs" or immersed in a vat of My Morning Jacket. Gone To Heaven is a dark journey, wrought with peril, but well-worth the trip. The band that Jake's assembled for this outing includes Matt Filippo on bass, Angie Heaton on drums, R.M. Racky on pedal steel, Matt Talbott (Centaur/Hum) on guitar, tambourine, and vocals, Steve Ucherek on guitar and vocals, and Lyle Hodges on synthesizer.
