2006, 5 Rue Christine
The follow-up to 2005's Carousel Waltz was recorded with a thrift store clarinet, an 80's drum machine, an 80's synth, and an out of tune 1800's piano. With 17 tracks in under 23 minutes, Ryland Bouchard presents the listener with an imaginative world containing mythical characters. Musically, the arrangements are simple and delicate, with harmonized falsetto vocals and staccato clarinet lines floating above minimal percussion and the occasional synth. Choruses and verses blur into musical interludes that travel with the characters they represent. Songs become puzzle pieces as parts of a much larger narrative that is alluded to but ultimately left up to the listener's imagination.

Ryland Bouchard, aka The Robot Ate Me, isn't the type of guy to stick to conventions. Throughout his career he has repeatedly made albums that barely connect in direction or sound. We once again find Bouchard playing mind games with Good World, which clocks in at about 20 minutes over 17 tracks, making the notion of whether this is an LP, EP or some kind of mini-album up for debate. For better or worse, this is also apparently one of those concept albums in which the concept is really only known to the artist, which I honestly prefer to something like The Who's Tommy. Bouchard tells his vague tale through his own brand of artsy pop, relying mainly on some scattered drums and horns, which actually make for a very addicting listen. In the silence that quickly follows Good World, the desire to once again press down on that play button feels strong.
