2011, Mush Records
Harmoni-Pet Deluxe is the debut release from Texas-based Melting Season, a musical enterprise that can only be described as a one-man-band, with the qualifier that the one man actually has twelve arms. With piles of instruments, field recordings, dollar-store props and vocal wizardry, Bruce Blay (Sleep Whale), the man behind the music, has created an album that evokes Animal Collective, Bibio and making out with your imaginary friend. Adopting a self-described "anything-goes" mentality, choosing spontaneity over recommended guidelines, the album was recorded in pseudo-solitary at home during a time when he was particularly far away from his usual musical playmates. The sounds of ukulele, drums, autoharp, kalimba, bells and a menagerie of others ebb, flow, clap and stomp, heralding the coming of a genre all its own. Part psych-folk, part woodsy-self-revelation and part aural design, Harmoni-Pet Deluxe was written as inspired by camping adventures, beach parties, and climbing trees... and it most certainly sounds like it.
