Picking up where 2003's critically acclaimed "Quicksand/Cradlesnakes" left off, the songs on this record combine the band's pop-oriented qualities with their spaced-out ethereal thoughts. This beautifully lush and patient masterpiece was influenced by Captain Beefheart's "Mirror Man," but was inspired by Tim Rutili's recurring dream of a giant half-man/half-bird character. "Heron King Blues" brings together numerology, bird references, wartime tension, filthy rock, and tender mercy to form Califone's most mysterious record to date.
