2004, Sympathy for the Record Industry
VINYL FORMAT. Out of print since the month it was released in 1993, "(He's a) Grunge Whore" is the only record from TURBONEGRO under this (short-lived) moniker. Under the influence of a new singer, the band renamed themselves Stierkampf (the German word for "bullfight") -- a change that apparently caused the band to be suspected of "crypto-nazism." Because of this suspicion, they were refused many gigs and played only a handful of shows (including two with Poison Idea and one with The Ramones). The EP's title, "(He's a) Grunge Whore" is meant as a reckoning with Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and features precise (and creepy) predictions of his rock star suicide. (Turbonegro once confronted the Nirvana singer at the Oslo Kalvøya Festival in 1992, which Nirvana headlined. Turbonegro were performing at the after-show party, and apparently Kurt left the party, holding his hands clamped to his ears, after giving Turbonegro a short listen.) Features five songs, including the Black Flag cover, "Six Pack," with Eugene Chadbourne on twin banjo and former singer Harald Fossberg on vocals. A glimpse of Turbonegro way back when.
