Nations by the River began in a derelict parking lot in Newcastle, during the Gelbison/The Sleepy Jackson tour of early 2003. It just so happened that after all the equipment from that night's show had been packed away and everyone was ready to head back down to Sydney, no one could find the keys to the tour-van. Escaping the mounting tension of the group, Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson) and Edo Kahn (Gelbison) ventured off into the car park with two guitars and gave birth to the first Nations songs. Meanwhile the other guys broke the locks, unpacked the van and searched in vain for the missing keys. Finally, at four in the morning, when all had given up hope of leaving and shifted their emphasis to drinking, Edo sheepishly appeared having found the keys in his pocket...
