Hot Hot Heat
Beginning as a noisy, synth-based combo in 1999, Victoria, British Colombia's Hot Hot Heat evolved into an aggressively catchy indie rock band two years later, when keyboardist Steve Bays took on the vocal duties, and guitarist Dante DeCaro joined their ranks. The group's new lineup -- which also featured founding members Paul Hawley on drums and Dustin Hawthorne on bass -- brought a newfound sense of melody and witty wordplay to their music, which they debuted on their 2002 EP Knock Knock Knock. The EP, along with tours with groups like the Walkmen and {$...[more]

Following close on the heels of their critically acclaimed Knock Knock Knock EP, Make Up the Breakdown is Hot Hot Heat's debut full-length, recorded with Jack Endino at Vancouver's Mushroom Studios. SPIN Magazine had this to say about the band: "Some retro new wavers hang themselves on their own skinny ties. While their peers lip-synch to Cure 45s, these Canucks take subtler cues from early-'80s synth disco. It's not new wave worship; it's the sound of punk teaching itself to dance." Formed in 1999 in the seemingly improbable locale of Victoria, British Columbia (perhaps the launch of a new British (Columbian) invasion?), Hot Hot Heat have, in their relatively short life-span, metamorphosed in a way coincidentally implicit in the elemental dynamism of their name. Heat as force of change. Hot Hot Heat have transformed from within the confines of their tense, angular synth-rock beginnings while losing none of their sense of urgency. Combining ?60s mod rock, ?70s prog and ?80s new wave/pun [ read more ]

Finally available on CD! This is Hot Hot Heat's second release, and this time they journey much deeper into the sounds of dark-wave. Here they have a hint of rock 'n' roll, but this time around they use their synths more, while the vocals sound akin to early Audience and early VSS. The Red Light Sting, on the other hand, play much louder music; it's not exactly dark or new-wave -- more like synth-wave. Their vocals vary from singing to shouting to full-on screaming. Restock. This is Hot Hot Heat's 2nd release and this time they journey much deeper into the sounds of dark-wave. Again, they have the hint of rock and roll but this time synths are used in a much greater degree than in their 1st 7". The vocals once again remind me of something like early Audience and VSS style vocals. The only thing that bugs me about this is the fact that there are some 'Locust' sounding keyboards in here and it is same with the Red Light Sting's side. TRLS play much more louder music and [ read more ]

Hot Hot Heat has scorched the college charts and warmed the hearts of critics with its most recent pair of indie albums. Now Canada's favorite band makes its major-label debut with Elevator, produced by Dave Sardy (Helmet, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers). With Elevator, Hot Hot Heat is on its way to the top with an album that, keeping with superstition, purposefully has no 13th track.
