Hot Hot Heat

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Beginning as a noisy, synth-based combo in 1999, Victoria, British Colombia's Hot Hot Heat evolved into an aggressively catchy indie rock band two years later, when keyboardist Steve Bays took on the vocal duties, and guitarist Dante DeCaro joined their ranks. The group's new lineup -- which also featured founding members Paul Hawley on drums and Dustin Hawthorne on bass -- brought a newfound sense of melody and witty wordplay to their music, which they debuted on their 2002 EP Knock Knock Knock. The EP, along with tours with groups like the Walkmen and {$...[more]

Restock. This is Hot Hot Heat's 2nd release and this time they journey much deeper into the sounds of dark-wave. Again, they have the hint of rock and roll but this time synths are used in a much greater degree than in their 1st 7". The vocals once again remind me of something like early Audience and VSS style vocals. The only thing that bugs me about this is the fact that there are some 'Locust' sounding keyboards in here and it is same with the Red Light Sting's side. TRLS play much more louder music and   [ read more ]

Finally available on CD! This is Hot Hot Heat's second release, and this time they journey much deeper into the sounds of dark-wave. Here they have a hint of rock 'n' roll, but this time around they use their synths more, while the vocals sound akin to early Audience and early VSS. The Red Light Sting, on the other hand, play much louder music; it's not exactly dark or new-wave -- more like synth-wave. Their vocals vary from singing to shouting to full-on screaming. This Victoria, B.C quartet were touted as the new Screamers, in that they use the same unconventional, distinctive set-up, harsh, dominating, creepy synths, pounding drums, wildly screaming vocals, and no guitars (though unlike their L.A. 1977-1981 forebears, Hot Hot Heat utilize a bass). And sure enough, they do bear a certain unconfined animal assault, if not in the primo song material, nor the fierce intellect and subversive humor (that also distinguished the great, late Tomata du Plenty and Co)   [ read more ]

Picking up where the Knock Knock Knock EP left off, Make Up the Breakdown completes Hot Hot Heat's transformation from a purveyor of the noisy synth-punk displayed on the band's debut into a polished, but still edgy, pop group. Where some of their contemporaries delve into '60s garage or '70s post-punk, Hot Hot Heat specializes in re-creating and reinvigorating the new wave of the late '70s and early '80s -- not the overly hairsprayed and eyelinered variety, but the geeky, abrasiv   [ read more ]

Next to the Strokes, Hot Hot Heat was the most pop-minded out of all the bands reviving garage rock and new wave in the early 2000s. It made sense that after the indie success of Make Up the Breakdown, they graduated to a major label for their second album, Elevator, which found them broadening their sound at the expense of the hooky songwriting that made them successful in the first place. Some of the same problems crop up on Happiness Ltd., albeit for slightly different reasons. {^   [ read more ]
