Hot Snakes consist of guitarist/vocalists John Reis and Rick Froberg, drummer Jason Kourkounis, and bassist Gar Wood. Reis is better known as Speedo, the vocalist for Rocket from the Crypt, but he'd also played in the acclaimed Drive Like Jehu with Froberg, who for his part had gone by the handles Rick Farr and Eric Froberg. Meanwhile, drummer Kourkounis had been affiliated with the Delta 72, but he may or may not have changed his name to J Sinclair for the new group. Confused? The Swami ordered, "Make me/it harder and make it better...yeah, and keep it perky," and so be it. Hot Snakes are diligent punk slaves and went to work mining acid blues and pumped-up indigenous beats. The result: "Audit in Progress," which elaborates on their previous downstroked rhythms and subsonic pulses and splays more heated piss than ever. Mario Rubalcaba joins on drums and adds a feverish propulsion to the molten murk. No squids allowed!

Sympathy/Swami's second release consists of John Reis (ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, DRIVE LIKE JEHU) on guitars and organs, Rick Fork (DRIVE LIKE JEHU) on vocals and Jason Kourkounis (DELTA 72, MULE) on the drum kit. The result is a sinister, dense, and turbulent sound that surpasses the sum of its parts.

LIMITED EDITION. RED VINYL IMPORT. LAST PEEL SESSIONS EVER! On their first trip to the UK, Hot Snakes were asked by legendary disc jockey John Peel to come into the BBC studios at Maida Vale and record a session for his radio show. The band went in on Oct. 11, 2004 and cut four songs live. The sound that was captured is a realistic snapshot of the Hot Snakes sound with rougher edges and spontaneous energy. Hot Snakes were to be his last guests, as John Peel died on a vacation in Peru a week later.

Suicide Invoice is the second full-length for this band, whose star members bring components of their former/current projects into the sometimes cartoon, always intense world of Hot Snakes. There's the theatrics of Rocket From the Crypt's John Reis and experimental hardcore elements of Rick Froberg's Drive Like Jehu with a weird, darker tone than Automatic Midnight, their first effort. Recorded in a garage, the album is another study in rock in jokes with such titles as {&"Gar For   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. "Audit doesn't take any breaks... But it uncovers melody in the strangest places, and sweats with an addicting fury. "I pay nothin' for nothin'," Froberg sneers over the title track's choking power chords. "Audit me/Audit me/I don't give a sh*t." Not everything here pounds you over the head. "This Mystic Decade" is relatively more subdued at first, that is until its rhythm section comes to life, drowning out the dulled-down guitars as Froberg screams the chorus like an anthem.
