While recording last year's "The Gap," Joan of Arc found themselves in excess of material. Rather than make "The Gap" a double album, the band delayed completion of the remaining songs and opted to return to them at a later date. By early 2001, Joan of Arc had finished the songs, resulting in the compelling "How Can Any Thing So Little Be Any More?." "How Can..." uses the same template as last year's "The Gap," but with a thoughtful distance that gives it a more direct impact and appeal than its predecessor. Imbued with the same captivating and clever approach to song craft that has defined Joan of Arc's previous recordings, "How Can..." also has a personality and refinement that embraces the lesser heard human side of the band while still remaining quietly just left of a definable boundary.
