Primary group members Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson, Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir, and Árni Vilhjálmsson founded World Champion Records in 2008 to release the debut record, which includes the track "Lotus," a cover version of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name," that was released as a promotional single. The group was founded in 2005 by Hlöðversson and Hjálmtýsdóttir and expanded in 2006 to include Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (the latter of the experimental electronic group múm) for a live performance at that year's Iceland Airwaves festival.
