2002, Thirsty Ear
The UK's Teenage Fanclub not only learn from their retro influences, they improve on them. Howdy! is a tour-de-force of 60's production and melodicism, overseen by the sharp eye of modern engineering. Multi-part vocal harmonies cascade over the songs in the style of the Byrds or the Turtles, though sometimes the simplest rock n' roll chord changes are used. Jangly twelve-strings, hammond organs, mellotron, and dynamic melodies constantly deliver a point of interest in songs that, by the rule of their genre, are not too long. Like some other modern-bands-doing-retro-pop, such as Belle & Sebastian, the Charlatans UK, or Wilco, Howdy! makes it sound easier than ever.
